Employment In Dist Rises By 30% Between 2009 & 2013

 

Thane district has witnessed a rise of nearly 30 per cent in the number of people employed between 2009 and 2013, according to the latest report available from the deputy labour commissioner's office of Thane.

 

The report also reveals that employment avenues have shown a marginal increase of average 1.5 per cent per year during the same period in Thane. In 2009, 5.62 lakh people were employed in various establishments, including shops, business houses and entertainment industry in Thane district and the number gradually rose by nearly 2.17 lakh in the intermediate period to 7.80 lakh in 2013, a growth of around 27 per cent in employment figures. Business units employ maximum number of people. The category includes service sectors, private offices, malls, call centres, etc.

Urban planner Sulakshana Mahajan said, “The Mumbai Metropolitan Region today is seeing polycentric growth. Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan and beyond are being seen as potential growth centres. Government should accord the required attention to Thane and its suburbs and provide good infrastructure and transport facilities."

 

Industrialist Ninad Jaywant who migrated his facility from Mumbai to Thane some years ago said the geographic location of Thane suits the business industry .

 

The Thane Municipal Corporation that is presently at loggerheads with the business industry over payment of local body tax said it is nonetheless working hard towards ensuring the commerce industry flourishes in Thane.
