Maharashtra to decide final length of Nagpur Phase-II metro

November 02, 2017

NAGPUR: The city will soon have a world class public transport system connecting nearby areas. The detailed project report (DPR) of Phase II of Nagpur Metro is nearing completion and will be submitted to the state government in three months. The DPR is being prepared by RITES, the general consultant of Mahametro.

Mahametro managing director Brijesh Dixit told the media on Wednesday that the total length of Phase II was 57 km. “Metro will be extended upto Kamptee, Butibori, Pardi and Wadi under the second phase. Its cost is over Rs 10,000 crore,” he said.

According to Dixit, the final length of Phase II would be decided by state government. “The government will consider the financial angle too. DPR will then go to Niti Aayog followed by Union cabinet for approval,” he said.

The early submission of Phase II’s DPR bodes well for Nagpur. Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis both hail from Nagpur. They are bound to use their good offices to get it cleared from the Centre.

Gadkari believes Nagpur Metro will not be viable until it connects Kamptee, Butibori, etc to the city. He had publicly said this in a Mahametro function. Guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who is the MLA from Kamptee, has several times demanded that Metro be extended upto Kanhan.

Earlier, in February, RITES had completed its feasibility study and found the Phase II to be viable. It had done three types of surveys for finding the viability of Phase II — traffic, topographic and geotechnical.

These surveys were done for Automotive Square to Kamptee, Prajapati Nagar (near Wardhaman Nagar) to Kapsi (on Bhandara Road), Lokmanya Nagar to Hingna, Mihan to Butibori and Wasudeo Nagar to Wadi.

Prajapati Nagar will be connected to Chhatrapati Nagar over the Inner Ring Road. RITES had found enough traffic volume on the these stretches to make Metro Rail viable.

The longest stretch in Phase II is from Mihan to Butibori — 13km. Next is 10km stretch from Automotive Square to Kamptee. According to Mahametro officials most of the expansion project will be elevated. The agency will try to build maximum at grade (ground level) stretch between Mihan and Butibori.
