THANE : While the biometric survey of slums by the Thane Municipal Corporation failed to provide a holistic database of the city’s slums, the Slum Rehabilitation Authority is set to begin another high-tech survey.
The door-to-door survey, like the one undertaken in Mumbai, is slated to begin from December 1 and will be completed in six months. The SRA authorities have claimed that the survey will map each and every slum in the city and also bring about transparency in the process of deciding the beneficiaries of the scheme.
Thane’s population is more than 18 lakhs, out of which, 53 per cent people live in slums. There are 210 slums in the city in which there are 2.32 lakh homes and 9.31 lakh people live them.
The SRA scheme was launched in Thane in 2015 on the lines of those in Pune and Nagpur.
The scheme has undertaken 94 proposals across the city, for which there needs to be a proper database of the slums. The SRA has decided to undertake a hightech door-to-door survey of Thane slums. The survey in Mumbai began almost a year and half ago.
An SRA official said, “The survey will be carried out using LIDER (Light Detection and Ranging) machine, a remote sensing device, which will take a 360 degree graph of the hut and also map it on the city map. The surveyors will visit each and every slum, take measurement of the huts, get information on each family member and take thumb impression and photographs of them. The survey will have videos of the huts and the surrounding area.”
The survey will be carried out by three agencies appointed by the SRA.
He added, “The survey will have a record of boundary of each of the slums. The scanned documents will be fed to our system and help us identify the beneficiaries easily as we will have a record of their documents and there will be no dispute or corruption. The survey will be a complete database of the slums in the city.”
Till date, the slum count in the city was based on the census record. The survey will give a ground measure, said the authorities.
Earlier, the corporation undertook biometric survey of slums under the BSUP but there were irregularities and it was shelved.
