Environmentalists said eco tours play an important role in mangrove conservation as they sensitise and educate people.

Sudhir Gaikwad Inamdar, environmentalist and bird photographer, said that six years ago nobody knew flamingos flock to the creek and bird lovers used to go to Sewri to catch a glimpse of them.

“During our visits, we came to know that the creek is home to various species. People will see many migratory birds including lesser and greater flamingos in Thane creek,” said Gaikwad.

Around 200 species of birds, which include globally threatened species like the Greater Spotted Eagle, have been spotted in the area.

More than 30,000 flamingos make the creek their home till May. After which, most of them migrate to Bhuj in Gujarat for breeding. “Almost 90 per cent of the flamingo population consists of lesser flamingos and the rest are greater flamingos. One can spot many waders too,” said another environmentalist Abhijeet Rane.

“During our study tour, we found that migratory birds arrive at the creek at different time. The sandpipers and plovers are the early ones to arrive followed by various species of ducks including the northern Shovellers, Pintails, Garganeys, spot billed, beautiful common teals and the most obvious and bigger flocks of lesser whistling ducks,” said Rane
