Builder Advertises Flats for Backward Caste Homebuyers

December 07, 2017

It is for the first time in the history of the city, a developer has advertised inviting people from the backward class to buy apartments in his upcoming project. The developer has advertised for his Andheri project for selling two and three-bedroom hall kitchen flats for the backward class. The developer says the reservation is caste-based and these homes will be given to people from Schedule Tribe (ST), Schedule Castes ( SC) and the Nomadic Tribe (NT) community.

Sagar Developers is developing the Dinanath Cooperative Housing Society Limited in the Four Bungalow, Andheri West area. Sameer Sharma of Sagar Developers, asserted that the backward class reservation was based on caste.

“There are a few flats in the project that they had to reserve for the people from SC/ST and the NT community as the land belonged to government, and there existed a building reserved for people from the backward class. Following redevelopment, nearly 20 per cent of the total sale flats had to be reserved,” an employee from the developing firm informed.

The builder has managed to sell the flats earmarked for the open category, and are now looking for buyers from the reserved category.

In the past, government had awarded housing plots to colonies for Artists (Kalanagar), Art and Literature (Sahitya Sahvas), and Journalists (Patrakar Colony).

Housing expert Sanjay Chaturvedi informs that reservation in housing societies was so far observed only in government societies. This is a first instance of a private builder building such a society.
