of visiting the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) office every time you have to pay your civic bill? Your woes will soon end as the TMC will finally launch smart cards by first week of January.

The card can be used for host of facilities as paying civic bills, shopping, movie tickets, public transport and so on.

The TMC has missed several deadlines in the past one year owing to, it claimed, technical reasons.

As part of Smart City project, the initiative called Digi Thane Project was supposed to be launched last December and then in July. The TMC claimed that the launch was delayed owing to various technical reasons, which have been resolved.

Once the project is launched, 27 corporation and government services will be available online, sparing residents numerous visits to the TMC office.

Sandeep Malvi, deputy municipal commissioner of TMC, said, “We have reached the launching stage of the project. We have to take beneficiaries such as traders, retailers or even card holders into confidence.”

“We had to explain the functioning and benefits of the card. Service providers, companies and organisation, who are stake holders in the project, were kept the loop. The process is over and we plan to launch the card in the first week of January,” he said.

The corporation had conducted several workshops throughout the year with different stake holders to explain the scheme. The Smart City budget will fund the Rs28.8-crore project.

The card is inspired by DigiTel, the smart card launched by Tel Aviv, which was awarded as the best international smart city in the world in 2014.

The TMC claimed that its Digi Thane will be much more advanced than Tel Aviv and also has a banking option.

The card will also double up as a debit card. It will be linked to mobile number and resident have to download an application for which they will a login ID and password.
