TMC Proposes Metro Route To Make Your Travel Smoother

January 12, 2018

Line will connect those areas where MMRDA route does not reach

THANE: To provide an alternative to the Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) service, the civic body now plans to connect the Metro-4 to an internal Metro line of its own.

The line will connect Wagale Estate, Manpada and Pokharan Road — parts of the city that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) line does not reach.

A report on the feasibility of this line will be submitted in a week, after which the corporation will study it.

“A few months ago, at a meeting attended by several political leaders, we decided to set up a strong internal public transport network,” said an official, who did not wish to be identified.

“Our proposal was approved at a general body meeting held two months ago. We have now appointed an agency to prepare a report on the feasibility of the project. Based on this, we will go ahead with a plan,” he added.

The city’s developmental plan proposes a 21-km-long high capacity mass transit route (HCMTR). Despite the corporation’s several proposals, it failed to take off. Now, the new internal Metro has been proposed along the same route.

“We will decide on the routes only after studying the feasibility report. We are, however, planning a ring route to connect the Metro station’s east and west stations,” said the official.

“The HCMRT route was to start from Thane (East) towards the Eastern Express Highway, Pokharan Road 1, Azadnagar to Brahmand, Balkum Saket, Cidco and then Thane station. This route will ensure that no part of the city is deprived of this mode of transport,” he said.

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) also plans to connect the Metro to the new Thane station. This plan, however, depends on the feasibility report.

The corporation has acquired a nine-hectare plot under the HCMRT project. However, 6,500 hectares have been encroached upon.

A part of the land also falls under the Coastal Regulation Zone, which will prove to be a hurdle during the land acquisition process, said officials.

“The Mahametro Company is working on the feasibility report, which will include information on how beneficial such a ring route will be. It will also give us an estimate of how much the project will cost, how much land needs to be acquired and how many constructions will be affected,” he said.

The feasibility survey costs Rs3.54 crore.

TENDERING PROCESS The tendering process of the Wadala to Kasarvadavli metro will be completed in one month. The work of the metro line is slated to start in a month’s time, said public works department minister Eknath Shinde.

Pravin Darade, additional commissioner of MMRDA, said that the tenders for the project have received good response. This will boost the important project and help complete it without delay.
