Gadkari gives Boost to Thane Waterway Project

THANE : The first phase of the water transport project between Kalyan, Thane and Vasai has got a major boost.

In a meeting in Delhi on Monday, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, asked the Thane municipal commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the central government in the next three weeks. The Thane Municipal Comissioner (TNC) has planned to use Ulhas river, creek and coastal network for water transport.

Sandeep Malvi, public relations officer of TMC, said, “Gadkari expressed his satisfaction over the report. Signing an MoU with the Centre will speed up the allotment of funds.” Gadkari has asked TMC to coordinate with IIT-Madras, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Mumbai Port Trust and Cochin Shipyard. The institutions will provide facilities and technologies at par with international standards. “To ensure smooth operation of the services, a repair and maintenance centre will be set up along the route, “said Malvi. The second phase will connect Thane to Mumbai and the third will link Navi Mumbai.
