TMC to spend 19.99 crore to develop 12 roads, 3 parks, a playground and open gallery

THANE : The residents of Kopri, in Thane east, can expect better roads and gardens soon.

After the Diva makeover, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has decided to undertake integrated development of Kopri.

It has proposed to spend Rs19.99 crore to develop 12 roads, three parks, a playground, civic gardens and an open gallery.Kopri, one of the oldest areas of the city, is steeped in history.

Its narrow roads, congested station area, vanishing open spaces and lack of parking spaces show a picture neglect and lack of development.Although the TMC widened the roads across the city, it ignored the roads of Kopri.

A civic official requesting anonymity said, There was a demand from residents and local representatives in Kopri to give a facelift to roads and open spaces. We have proposed to undertake the concretisation using ultra-thin white topping (UTWT) technique of over 12 roads in the area.

These include most of the major roads near Thane east railway station, forest office, Koliwada and Kopri village. The work on the roads is slated to complete by 2020, said the official.

In an integrated development, gardens, playgrounds, art gallery and bridges will also be given a facelift.

We will install seating arrangements, fitness and play equipment at all the civic gardens in Kopri. The three major parks Dattaji Salvi Nature Park, Survoday garden and MD Joshi garden will also be revamped and beautified in this project.

The old bridge at Gandhinagar too will be repaired in this scheme, the official added. The area also has a playground that lacks basic facilities such as a safety wall or security, which will also get a facelift. The work, costing Rs19.99 crore, will be carried out over three years. Thus, the budget of Rs3.5 crore will be spent in 2017-18, while the remaining budget will be used in 2018-19 and 2019-20.

The beautification of open gallery near Anshtavinayak junction will also be undertaken in the project.

Sachin Kamble, 37, a Kopribased lawyer, said, Kopri forms the east side of the city and some parts of it shares borders with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).The area is divided into two parts one is developed and the other with old settlements of Koli and Sindhi communities is neglected.

The main problems are the narrow roads across Kopri, especially near the railway station and the bus stops. Widening and concretising these roads will ease congestion problems in this area, added Kamble.
