Thane Shines Bright as LED Lights Cut Down Power Bill, Ewaste

April 18, 2018

Every year, the TMC has saved 4.8 lakh units of power worth ₹3.48 crore in electricity bills

THANE: In the past few years, the city has been literally shining bright in terms of not only luminosity, but also decreasing power bills and e-waste. Reason? LED street lights which the city has switched to, replacing sodium vapour street lamps.

Street lights which glowed with 15 to 17 lux (unit of luminous intenisty), now glow with 24 lux, claims the electrical department of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).

LED lights have saved Rs3 crore of taxpayers’ money in the past two years, while the power requirement for street light has reduced by 50%. TMC claimed that the e-waste of mercuryladen sodium vapour lamps dumped has also reduced, as LED lights hardly burst.

On Friday, civic commissioner asked the electricity department to replace the rest of the lights with the energy-efficient LED lights in one year. There are more than 32,500 street lamps across the city, of which, 21,500 lamps are LED ones.

TMC adopted the ESCo (Energy Saving Companies) concept that is widely used by western countries, for this project. More than 70% of power consumption is saved by using LED bulbs, thus decreasing electricity bills. The money saved will be used by the ESCo contractor for the maintenance of these lamps. Around 7,500 lamps were fitted by ESCo contractor.

An electricity department officer said, “In the past few years, we have observed that the luminosity of the city has increased from 17 lux to 24 lux. Moreover, every year we have saved 4.8 lakh units of power worth Rs3.48 crore in electricity bills. We have saved Rs29 lakh a month in power bills. The city earlier required 7mega watt electricity, which has now decreased to merely 3.5 mega watt.”

LED lights have also decreased e-waste. “The sodium vapour lamps have around 3 mg of mercury and the rate of bursting of these lamps is also high. Many sodium vapour lamps used to be dumped along with the hazardous levels of mercury. LED lamps do not have mercury and the rate of failure of the lamps is low. E-waste of street lights has reduced after the replacement” the officer said.
