Mumbai-Alibaug Ro-Ro car ferry is ready to go

February 12, 2020

The much-delayed Ro-Ro car ferry from Mumbai to Mandwa will be flagged off next month

That long drive you have to make to get to the strip of land just beyond the horizon may now be a thing of past. The much-delayed, much-awaited Mumbai to Alibaug car ferry service will finally kick off next month. With this, you can get from Mumbai to Alibaug in just 90 minutes as against the three hours it often takes. And the view will be much better, for sure.

When will the Mumbai-Alibaug Ro-Ro Car ferry launch?

In a matter of weeks. Mumbai Maritime Board officials have given Mumbai Mirror “February end” as the date. Maharashtra Tourism, meanwhile, has pegged it as “next month”, i.e. March. What we do know is that the legal tangles have been sorted, and the vessel that will serve as the roll-on, roll-off car ferry has arrived from Greece.

Ticket prices for Mumbai-Alibaug Ro-Ro car ferry

The Ro-Ro car ferry can take up to 180 cars and 500 passengers, per the Mirror report. Tickets will be priced around Rs1,000 per four-wheeler and Rs235 for passengers. If true, this could mean that a one-way ride from Mumbai to Alibaug for a party of four could cost around Rs2,000. Not cheap, but great if you’re in a hurry, because….

Travel time from Mumbai to Alibaug on Ro-Ro ferry

The travel time on the Ro-Ro ferry is likely to be around 60 minutes. This does not include the docking and undocking time. Compare this with the three-plus hours it takes from South or Central Mumbai to Alibaug. This could also shave off an hour and the worst part of the drive to Goa or the other beautiful beaches along the Konkan coast.

So where is Bhaucha Dhakka?

Bhaucha Dhakka, or the Princess Dock, is the port on the Mumbai side from where the car ferry will ply. The ro-ro terminal is around a kilometre from the southern end of the Eastern Freeway. On the Alibaug side, the Ro-Ro car ferry will dock at Mandwa, where other regular ferries currently dock. The main town of Alibaug is about 20km from here.
