Maharashtra: 10 lakh construction workers to get 3,000 more

August 18, 2020

Mumbai: Maharashtra building and other construction workers welfare board led by Labour Minister Dilip Walse Patil on August 13 sanctioned an additional Rs3,000 to each of 10 lakh registered workers in view of lockdown. Earlier, it had sanctioned Rs2,000.

Alarmed by the plight of construction workers in the state following lockdown in the wake of Covid-19, the board had sanctioned Rs2,000 per worker. It was thought that once lockdown was lifted, construction activity will resume slowly and later in full swing.

When lockdown was extended till August 31, pressure was mounting on Walse Patil to release more funds. After meeting Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, it was decided to release Rs 3,000 more per worker with immediate effect.

Deposits with the board stand at Rs 9,500 crore, with nearly 22.8 lakh registered workers and around 10.5 lakh eligible workers. "We have registered and live workers. Some workers do not renew registration. Workers who have not renewed registration and who are above 60 are not eligible," a board official said.

The official said workers who left Maharashtra will be eligible for assistance if they have renewed membership for the current year. On fund mobilization, the official said a builder or developer has to pay 1% of the estimated cost of a project to the board as welfare fund. The project cost does not include cost of land.
