BMC Plans Underground Parking Lots In Every Zone

Underground parking is part of a strategy by its traffic department to decongest locations where there is a huge demand for parking.

“We have floated tenders for three locations,” said BMC additional municipal commissioner P Velrasu, referring to the Flora Fountain area, Matunga and Zaveri Bazar. “The contract period for construction of the underground parking lot at Flora Fountain would be 15 months and the appointed contractor would be responsible for planning, designing, construction and commissioning the parking system. The contractor will also be responsible for annual maintenance for 20 years,” said a civic official.

Officials said the parking towers at Zaveri Bazar and Matunga would come up on BMC land. Officials anticipate the space required would be less as cars can be stacked in a mechanised parking.
