Online tenant checks in Maharashtra from August-end

Aug 14, 2022

PUNE: Tenants who register their leave and license documents with the property registration department will be exempt from visiting police stations for verification as the department is now set to map data from all 1,130 police stations of the state.

Officials with the state registration department said while the process is currently underway in Pune and Mumbai, technical issues had kept it from a statewide rollout.

"But it will be in place by August-end, for entire Maharashtra," said state Inspector General of Registration and Stamps, Shravan

Hardikar Hardikar told TOI that the statewide system is currently undergoing testing.

Nearly 85,000 leave and license documents are e-registered in the state every month, according to property registration offices.

Deputy Inspector General of Registration and Stamps (IT) Suhas Mapari said work of mapping the police stations with data of all 44,000 villages was on so that a person e-registering can also mention the name of the police station and the official overseeing the paperwork.

"We have carried out several tests as the earlier version that was in place since 2019 has been upgraded to the new tenant verification system. The police department has been given the software and data is being shared," Mapari said.

Earlier, house owners were required to submit tenants' details online on the Pune police portal or at the nearest police station. But officials said many preferred to simply not register, just to avoid visiting police stations.

"The new system is a perfect example of how departments can work together to ensure due checks and safety of citizens. This is also a simple way to share data," one official said. Superintendent of Police Sambhaji Kadam (Technical Services), CID Crime Pune, said the mapping of 1,130 police stations in the state will offer up all tenant registrations once the leave and licence agreement is registered with the property registration department.

"This means citizens will no longer have to physically visit police stations for verification as that station will have access to e-registration data from across the state," he said. One addition to the information that needs to be provided is residential addresses in the past five years and a permanent address.

In Pune and Mumbai, the system has already helped reduce footfalls at major police stations.

Tenants too said the new system will ensure they don't have to do rounds of police stations. "It's simple and hassle-free as the police already have our data," said a tenant from Pune.
