Mumbai to get Rs 6322 crore twin tunnels for east-west connectivity under Goregaon-Mulund link road project

Once the total project gets over, the travelling between Goregaon and Mulund will take only 20 minutes, which is over 80 minutes now.

Mumbai: The work of Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR), the Rs 8000 crore road project that will connect the Western Express Highway at Goregaon in the Western suburb to the Eastern Express Highway at Mulund in the Eastern suburb, will be completed in four phases, the civic authorities said. Of the total 12-km stretch, 4.7 km will be an underground twin tunnel below Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP).

In the first phase of the project, the 1x1 lane Rail Over Bridge at Nahur Railway station will be widened to a 4X4 lane with service road at an estimated cost for work is Rs. 202.3 Crore. The work has already been started and the expected date of completion is May 2023. The existing 30-metre-wide road on both sides along the alignment of the proposed tunnel will be widened to 45.70 metres in the second phase. The estimated cost of this 5.30-metrestretch is Rs 130 crores and it is also expected to complete by May 2023.

The third phase has been divided into two sub-projects. Under the first sub-project, the construction of flyovers and elevated rotary along Goregaon-Mulund Link Road at three junctions such as near Ratnagiri Hotel in Goregaon, at Junction of G.G. Singh Road and GMLR and Hedgewar Junction in Mulund. The total cost of this project is estimated at Rs 666.06 crores. The work has started and will be completed by Jan 2025.

The work of the tunnel comes under the second sub-project in the third phase.

The twin tunnel below 19 hectares of forest land in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) will be 4.7 km long with a 13-metre internal finish diameter. The depth of the tunnel will vary from 20 metres to 160 metres and cross passages will be provided at every 300m. A 1.6 km box tunnel will also be constructed in the Film city with open cuts for city-side approaches. The estimated cost of the tunnel including the cut and cover box tunnel is Rs 6322 Crores, the BMC said in a statement. The work on the tunnel is expected to start in February 2023.

The fourth stage will start when the work of the underground tunnel is in progress. Flyovers of 1.22 km in length with cable-stayed spans at Eastern Express Highway and an underpass over Western Express Highway will be constructed.

The BMC authorities hope that the road can be opened for public traffic by December 2026. The total cost of the project, which was initially pegged at Rs 4700 crore, has now increased to over Rs 8000 crore.
