Once completed, the Panvel-Karjat suburban corridor will reduce the travel time by 30 minutes and commuters can reach Panvel from CST in one hour forty-five minutes.

The development of the Panvel-Karjat suburban corridor is in full progress and is likely to be completed by March 2025. As per officials from the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), the construction of a flyover and bridges along the Panvel and Karjat suburban corridors is underway. Once completed, the corridor will reduce the travel time for commuters by 30 minutes, and they can reach Panvel from CST in one hour and forty-five minutes.

The doubling of the Panvel-Karjat suburban railway corridor is being done under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3. After receiving the approval in 2016, the project was delayed owing to land acquisition issues. Private land of about 56.4 hectares across 24 villages in Panvel, Khalapur, and Karjat Talukas was needed for the project. Of this, private land of 42.55 hectares has been acquired. Moreover, government land of 4.4 hectares has been acquired.

Further, the process of purchasing 9.18 hectares of forest land, including 4.96 hectares of government land and 4.22 hectares of private forest, required for the project is currently in progress. Work has commenced on the entire route as CCF Thane has given permission to work in forest areas, as per an MRVC official.

At present, the section from Panvel to Karjat has a single line that is used for operating long-distance passenger trains and goods trains. An additional track will be added with new station buildings at Mohope, Chowk, Karjat, Chikhale, and Panvel stations for converting this section into a suburban corridor. The project will be developed at an approved cost of Rs 2,782 crore.

Bridge construction work and earthwork are underway for this project. Both the road overbridge and railroad flyover on the Pune Expressway has opened. A total of 44 bridges, three tunnels, 15 road underpasses (RUB), seven road overbridges, and a flyover will be constructed under this project.

As per MRVC officials, the project will lessen the load on the central railway main line. Currently, the Thane-Kalyan line of the central railway’s suburban section is among the busiest routes. The traffic on the Thane-Kalyan stretch will reduce with the availability of an alternative route for Karjat since the crowd of Krajat trains will be distributed.
