Mumbai Metro Line 5 | Orange Line - Connecting Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan with Mumbai
Feb 22, 2023
Mumbai Metro Line 5, also known as the Orange Line, is a proposed rapid transit line that will connect the suburbs of Thane and Bhiwandi with the city of Mumbai. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is developing the proposed line. It is part of the larger Mumbai Metro project that aims to provide a more efficient and comfortable transportation system for the city's residents.
About Mumbai Metro Line 5
Mumbai Metro Line 5, or Orange Line, is a 24.90 km long elevated corridor connecting the suburbs of Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan. The line will consist of a total of 17 stations and will be constructed in two phases. It will also provide interconnectivity between the ongoing Metro Line 4 (Wadala to Kasarvadavali), the proposed Metro Line 12 (Kalyan to Taloja), and the existing Central Railway. This will significantly enhance rail-based access to commercial and government bodies and geographical landmarks in these areas.
In October 2017, the Maharashtra government's cabinet approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Orange Line at Rs 8,416 crore. India's Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the project in December 2018. The Orange Line is expected to open in 2025 and will feature multiple interchanges connecting to other metro lines, such as the Green Line-4 at Kapurbawdi and Navi Mumbai Line-1 at Taloja, as well as bus and suburban rail services throughout its route.
Once completed, Metro Line 5 will significantly reduce current travel times, offering people a more convenient and efficient mode of transportation. Commuters can expect to enjoy reduced travel time by 50% to 75%. The Orange Line is set to provide much-needed relief to Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan residents, who currently rely on buses and local trains for commuting to Mumbai.
