Mumbai News highlights: Owing to a scheduled visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Mumbai on Friday, the traffic department have issued a notification detailing regulations between 4.30 pm and 6.30 pm around Andheri. Traffic authorities said that as a public programme is scheduled on Friday at Aljamea-Tas-Saifiyah in Marol Campus at Andheri (East), large number of citizens are expected to attend the programme. The prime minister is expected to inaugurate two new road projects and flag off trains from CSMT Station. Modi had last visited Mumbai in January, when he inaugurated projects worth over Rs 38,000 crore, including two Metro lines.
Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde, who turned 59 on Thursday thanked several people, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, for extending best wishes on his birthday. A 50-kilogram cake was cut in Thane to celebrate Shinde’s birthday, while the opposition Nationalist Congress Party added political colour to the occasion by cutting a cake depicting a ‘khokha’, street lingo for a crore. During the day, Shinde inaugurated a four-lane road overbridge over the railway tracks in Kopri in the district.
In other news, Mumbai recorded poor air quality than Delhi yet again on Thursday. According to System of Air Quality and Weather Forecast and Research (SAFAR), the maximum city’s overall air quality index (AQI) stood at 283 (poor) in comparison to Delhi’s 156 (moderate). Pollution levels have been soaring in the financial capital for the last few weeks, making it difficult for residents, especially the elderly and those with breathing trouble, to go out. Experts have cited the current weather condition as well as external factors like construction and vehicular emission for the deteriorating air quality.
