THANE: The Thane Municipal Corporation raked in a stellar Rs 200 crore in revenues from property tax till last week, which is almost 25% of its target for FY 2023-24 in the first 66 days of the first quarter (Q1) itself, informed officials.
The Majiwada Manpada ward accounted for nearly 33% of the total property tax collected by the TMC in this period among the nine wards in the city, followed by Vartak Nagar and Naupada-Kopri wards. Municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar said property tax is a major source of revenue for the corporation and attributed timely generation of bills, sops in form of rebates for timely tax payers and easing of the modes of payment for the positive response from residents.
“Our property tax department was given a recovery target of Rs 900 crore this fiscal, of which they have collected Rs 200 crore till June 7, even before the end of Q1. We have registered an increase of 90% recovery compared to last fiscal year when Rs 108 crore was recovered till the same period. We now hope to overshoot our collections for the fiscal and collect Rs 1,000 crore. We are thankful to our residents for cooperating,” said Bangar.
Officials informed that the rebate for taxpayers who paid their annual taxes at one go in the first quarter also encouraged many to opt for early payment and said the initial deadline of June 15, was being extended till June 30 on public demand.
Bangar added that one of the contributing factors was generation and disbursal of tax bills for FY 2023-24 starting first week of April, unlike till last year when it used to be made available late. Citizens were alerted through SMS and tax collection centers were also operational in all ward offices even during public holidays in addition to strengthening the online tax payment facilities.
“Taxpayers can get copy of payment on propertytax.thanecity.gov.in or from the nearest ward office. Payments can also be done online through internet banking, debit or credit cards as well as UPI. We want to ensure that taxpayers don’t have to travel to the municipal office or even meet anyone for any information on payment,” he said.
Meanwhile, activists questioned why the administration was ignoring the Majiwada-Manpada ward that has regularly contributed largely to civic coffers. “Several societies in and around the plush locales of Ghodbunder road are still paying steep amount for availing water tanker services. The areas are also facing inadequate public transport connectivity and face winding jams,” complained a resident
